You know their names and now you know their faces

Our beers have been named for quite a while now, but Indeed Brewing Company is happy to reveal that they have faces too! We couldn’t be more excited to finally share them with you.

The two flagship beers: Day Tripper Pale Ale, and Midnight Ryder American Black Ale will be our baseline for hop-forward beers, but don't think we are only about hops because others will soon follow.

Both designs, created by local artist Chuck U, capture the fun and adventurous spirit of Indeed perfectly. The character driven designs and Chuck’s unique style and imagination combine to make some pretty memorable craft cans (in our humble opinion).

In addition to being the perfect beer package, aluminum cans are also a great medium for art and design (http://www.indeedbrewing.com/why-cans/). Packaging our beer in cans allows us to really take advantage of a 360-degree design surface, and do something really eye-catching. Look for these attention grabbing cans to hit local liquor store shelves in early fall.

If you don’t have a crazy can collection like this guy, http://bit.ly/MZwrX5, and aren’t inclined to start one, fear not, you can still hold onto a piece of Indeed. A limited release custom-designed Chuck U poster will accompany each of our flagship beers. Stay tuned for details and dates on the upcoming poster release!

And what about the beer you say? We plan to brew batch no. 1 early this week.

Cheers!

We can’t have a ‘brewery’ without the brewhouse

Until two weeks ago we referred to our space at Indeed Brewing Company in NE Minneapolis as “site” or “the building.” But ever since we received the 30 BBL brewhouse, manufactured by Specific Mechanical, we call it a brewery!

Just like Mario and Luigi in Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. we made the pipe connections for the mash tun, kettle, and hot & cold liquor tanks ourselves. A grist hopper, which looks something like a water tower, is placed on stilts and rests just above the mash tun. Then on brew day, the malt is released and cascades (no pun intended, this is the mash tun for criminy sake) into the mash tun from just above it. As soon as we have supplies and the steam piping is inspected, we will run a test mash to determine boil off and efficiency of the sparkling new stainless steel system.

Josh Bischoff, Indeed’s award winning head brewer, has been studying his new “office.”  It’s all knobs, switches, and valves. A bit of luxury from what he has been used to over the last ten years as a professional brewer.  He’s also been planning out his “brew day” routine to make sure we get this puppy humming before it’s time to get serious and brew batch no. 1.  Josh has also been fine-tuning the two flagships: Day Tripper Pale Ale and Midnight Ryder American Black Ale. (Don’t worry; we still plan to release a seasonal at launch as well. We’ll fill-in the details very soon.)

Everyday new pieces of equipment like coolers, a bottle filler (for 750 mL bottles) arrive for delivery, but we still have two outstanding pieces of key equipment: the fermenting vessels / brite tanks, and the canning line. Both of which are en route to the brewery.  Meanwhile, our friend and skilled carpenter Bob, has begun work on the 30-foot bar in the taproom. The red oak he cut down by hand on his family property in Wisconsin was quarter-cut by him and then driven to Iowa to be kiln dried. We are very excited to this see this piece of furniture in our taproom, which we think of as your new living room.

We hope to see you really soon as we are still on track to open at the end of July or very early August. Until then…

INDEED BREWING COMPANY TO OPEN BREWERY, TAPROOM THIS SUMMER IN NORTHEAST MINNEAPOLIS

“Hop-forward” brews will be available on site and in restaurants, bars and liquor stores.

MINNEAPOLIS MN, FEBRUARY 6, 2012 — Can three former college roommates and craft beer lovers open a destination taproom and brewery in a vibrant Minneapolis arts district?

Indeed.

“We see life as an adventure and craft beer is the perfect drink to take along,” said Tom Whisenand, co-founder of Indeed Brewing Company. “It’s something you reward yourself with after you do something great – or something mundane. Either way, at least you’re getting it done.”

Indeed will brew hop-forward, adventurous beers for adventurous drinkers – think chipotle-smoked porter. Better yet, Indeed will be the only Minnesota craft brewery packaging beer in six packs of 12 oz. cans – perfect for taking along in a backpack, kayak or stashing in the refrigerator.

“We want to make the best craft beers possible, and we want to do it in a fun way – an adventurous way. That means we’re going to make beers that defy styles and push the limits,” said Whisenand. “But at the same time, we’re going to make beers that will be a good reward after a long hike, a bike ride or after 10 hours at the office.”

To get there, Indeed brought aboard award-winning brewer Josh Bischoff from Minneapolis’ Town Hall Brewery to helm production. Bischoff recently won a silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival in Denver for his experimental beer “L.S.D.” – featuring lavender, sunflower honey and dates – and shared in another six GABF medals during his time at Town Hall.

Indeed Brewing Company will open its 12,000-square-foot brewery and taproom in a century-old building at the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District this summer. The company plans to self-distribute two flagship craft brews to liquor stores, bars and restaurants, as well as pour pints in its 1,500-square-foot taproom with adjoining patio.

“We want our taproom to be a hub for all things Indeed, like a living room for our brewery,” Whisenand said, “so we can invite people in to get to know us and our beer.”

The brewery founders -- Tom Whisenand, Nathan Berndt and Rachel Anderson – were once roommates at the University of Minnesota and photographers at the Minnesota Daily, the school’s student newspaper. The three built media careers of their own in Minnesota and stayed connected through their love of good beer and good people. They said Indeed will be their way of contributing something positive to their home state.

As its summer 2012 opening approaches, Indeed will release more details about its product lineup, taproom opening date and plans for growth.

###

Indeed Brewing Company will open in a refurbished Northeast Minneapolis warehouse this spring and be pouring beer by summer 2012. The brewery, at 711 15th Ave. NE in Minneapolis, will have an initial capacity of 3,800 barrels a year and a canning line that can produce 36 cans per minute.

As an invested member of the community, the company will also donate at least one percent of its annual sales to local and national non-profit organizations as part of One Percent for the Planet, a movement that encourages corporate philanthropy for the preservation and restoration of the natural environment.

Introducing Indeed Brewing Company

Beer. It’s perfect, isn’t it? It’s the drink that stands equally well alone as it does when paired with onion rings or even a rack of lamb. It can be as lowbrow or pretentious as you want, but it always seems to be just what you need. One thing we’ve come to notice about beer is that it has some things in common with other classic beverages. For instance, discussions of wine might lead to mention of terroir—the taste of the land. We like to think great craft beer has terroir, too. The difference is, we don’t talk with a ridiculous French accent. Instead, we offer you finely crafted beer in a humble, awesome, aluminum can. You with us?

We want to tout the positive side of things, and embrace mindfulness and adventure—a feeling we’ve found plenty of here in Minnesota.

Indeed Brewing Company is situated in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis—a location replete with rich local history. Known for being the birthplace of Art-a-Whirl and the NE Minneapolis Arts District, it’s inspiring for Indeed to be part of an area that has grown from immigrant stomping grounds to a place that hipsters call home, tipping back a glass of brew in the many pubs found here.

But we find Minneapolis to be particularly fitting as the home of Indeed. After all, this is the town where our adventures begin, this is the town we come home to, and this is the town in which we regularly raise a glass in celebration of making the most of life. We like to think we’ve put that certain Minneapolis terroir (if you’ll pardon our French) right in every barrel of beer we brew.

Why “Indeed?” We just can’t believe we’re the only ones tired of the whiny, doom-and-gloom sentiment around us. We want to tout the positive side of things, and embrace mindfulness and adventure—a feeling we’ve found plenty of here in Minnesota. Even Indeed’s logo has a hint of a smile—a sense of happiness and fun that illustrates precisely what we want to share with our customers. It’s that subtle smile we feel Minnesotans enjoy sharing with one another, especially deep in winter. We’re a hearty breed, we Nordics, and it’s nice to have something to smile about together.

But even if you aren’t prone to shoveling knee-deep snow each winter, then gracefully wiping away a bead of sweat come July’s sweltering temps, we want you to taste our beer and realize what we’ve already come to know: Whether standing, sitting, floating or flying, having a tasty, high-quality craft beer in hand means not only that your taste buds are happy, but that you’re on your way to having a fun and meaningful discussion with other—sometimes about the beer, but more often about everything else in life. The people of Indeed love fun. Come on, let’s have fun together.
